Fallout 76 Question

I'm looking for info on how to tag enemies.  I'm a melee player and when I get to a nuke zone I smash ghouls with my melee weapon.  Yesterday I was doing my thing in a nuke zone but was constantly attacked by about three other players.  I had no idea what they were pissed about.  One of them sent me a message saying "why not tag enemies so we can all share in the loot".  I don't understand what this means.  How do I tag enemies with a melee weapon.  All these other folks were using rifles or pistols.  Thanks for any information you can give me on this as I don't want to piss everyone off.

Yea... I don't think many if any active members here play Fallout 76.. Sorry.

this is a site that many active members heavily bashes the game on a regular basis.
